Just in case...

Were our ancestors so naive to believe in ghosts? Weren't they wise enough to believe in the effect of visual signals on the human mind? People were easily impressed in times before the invention of television. There is evidence of a visitor of a Sunday service who died of fear when the priest described the terrors of hell too vividly.

But these pictures must have worked even without words. The protectors of holy places had be strong and terrifying, as the builders of monrose Abbey and Roslyn Chapel believed. And even the cistern of Edinburgh Old Town near the Knox House was equipped with this wonderful iron mask.
