In 1939, all the Baltic Germans were allowed to make a choice to go to Germany or become citizens of the Sowjet Union. Most of them got on the boats to the west. They were promised to be able to live together with their former neighbours and friends; but when they arrived, they were scattered all over a land from which the Polish had been expelled before. Our Parents lived as a reverend's family in a place in the country, far away from my mothers fancy city-life. |

| No, this is not Wolfgang with a dress on. It is his younger sister, born 1949. The similarity was stunning!
Later, when I saw the pictures in the album and asked who this child was, my father said: "That's you, too." They could not talk about it. But I saw this constant pain in my mother's face and had no explanation. |
